2006 New Orleans Conference a Success!

The first annual John Bell Hood Historical Society Conference was held in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 6-7, 2006. Attendees enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Brandon Beck, Founder and Director Emeritus of the McCormick Civil War Institute at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, titled, "We Thought He Was Too Close: Gen. John Bell Hood at Gettysburg and Chickamauga". Attendees visited Lake Lawn/Metairie Cemetery, and the tombs of Gen. Hood and Gen. Richard Taylor. The group was given special access to the mausoleums beneath the Army of Tennessee and Army of Northern Virginia monuments, where Gen. PGT Beauregard in entombed, and where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was interred from 1891 to 1893. Conference attendees later toured historic Confederate Memorial Hall Museum, and were given a special viewing of the original Confederate Battle Flag, hand sewn by the Carey sisters of Baltimore in 1862. Some attendees also visited the nearby National D-Day Museum. The final conference event was a visit to the postwar Garden District home of Gen. Hood, where the attendees were graciously hosted by the current owners, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Stevenson.
